Mia stood at the door to Donovan’s office, reluctant to cross the threshold without an invitation.

“May I come in? I bring an olive branch.”

Seated at his desk, Donovan stopped writing, and without the scratching of his fountain pen the room seemed deathly quiet. “An olive branch?” he asked, frowning.

A knot of tension sat like a stone in her chest, making it hard to breathe.

“May I?” She gestured towards the chair in front of the desk.

His frown deepened. “Of course, Mia…”

“No, let me speak first, please?” she asked, stopping by the chair, but not sitting.

After a brief hesitation, Donovan nodded.

Mia set the box down on the desk. “I brought you some Hari cake, red velvet.”

“My favourite,” he replied with a confused smile.

“I want…no, I need to apologise, Donovan. My behaviour last night… I’m so sorry. I haven’t ruined things, have I?” She furiously blinked back tears.

Donovan pushed away from the desk and got to his feet. He moved to stand in front of Mia, then pulled her into his arms.

“Idiot,” he muttered, and she heard laughter in his voice.

Sheer, naked relief flooded her. She released a pent-up sob and wrapped her arms around his waist, holding tight to the man who was the very beat of her heart.

“So,” he said after a long moment, holding her at arm’s length. “The bandage is getting smaller. Everything okay?”

She smiled, and her breath hitched when he wiped away a tear that had spilled down her cheek.

“It’s healing nicely.” She repeated Doctor Granger’s words and decided not to tell him about the near-miss with Jolene’s car, or the sighting of Snood Man, as she’d come to think of him. The first had been her own fault, and the second…well, she didn’t want to think too much about that.

“Glad to hear it. Why don’t we take that cake through to the kitchen and have it with some coffee?” he suggested.

“I’ve already had a huge scone, but I wouldn’t mind a cup of coffee.” With his hand in the middle of her back, Mia led the way through to the kitchen. “Where’s Mrs Kloves?”

“I believe she’s supervising the—”

“Church Ladies?” Mia cut in excitedly. “Introduce me, Donovan, please?”

He was fighting a smile when he shook his head. “Those women…intimidate me.”

“They like you,” Mia said, waggling her eyebrows. “Do their T-shirts have your face on them?”

“No, they do not,” he said, shooing her away. “Go and make some coffee, impudent upstart.”

Mia picked up the kettle and carried it to the sink to fill it. She suspected that nothing could remove the smile from her face.

“Do you want to go to the tree lighting at the village hall tonight?” She switched on the kettle and fetched the cafetière and bag of coffee from the cupboard.

“I have Evensong, but I should be finished in time.” Donovan took two cups from the draining board by the sink, picked up a towel and started to dry them. “Will I meet you there, or can I tempt you to come to Evensong?”

Mia grinned.
